‘Preparation of the concept and designs for automatic control systems, including protective, isolating and control valves, and for the construction of a pumping station within the integrated district heating system of Katowice, Chorzów and Siemianowice Śląskie’

 

BREPO prepared the building permit and detailed design for the electrical and instrumentation and control disciplines. The project was important to safeguarding reliable network operation for the residents and institutions of the Silesian conurbation supplied by the Katowice, Chorzów and Siemianowice Śląskie district heating system owned by the Tauron Ciepło group, and to protecting the East, West and Konstal mains of the ELCHO combined heat and power plant in Chorzów.
The proposed technical solution provides the power supply and control system for the ‘Bytkowska’ pumping station, which operates in a closed district heating network and interacts with the ELCHO CHP plant and Katowice Generation Plant heat sources. The solution is designed to optimise district heating network operation and monitor the impact of pumping-station operation on the heat sources and on other existing or future district-heating pumping stations.
The newly designed ‘Bytkowska’ pumping station is a supervisory facility capable of synchronising the operation of its associated facilities through a VPN data-exchange channel. The technical solution provides access to all information available in the existing data-exchange network. The ‘Bytkowska’ pumping station will provide setpoint control, synchronisation and supervision for the individual components of the district heating network in accordance with the requested operating dispatch.
The main design elements included:

  1. design of a 20 kV medium-voltage utility connection for primary and backup power supplies, with a rated capacity of 2 MVA,
  2. design of a 20 kV indirect billing metering system,
  3. design of the low-voltage power supply and control system, including a redundant pumping-station control system, variable-frequency drives, active and passive higher-harmonic filtering, and a fibre-optic-based visualisation and telemetry system [industrial automation],
  4. design of the closed-circuit television system [CCTV],
  5. design of the facility’s fire protection and fire monitoring systems,
  6. design of general, emergency and escape lighting,
  7. design of automatic control, protection and monitoring systems for the East, West and Konstal district-heating mains in the network pumping hall of the ELCHO combined heat and power plant in Chorzów.
